1- Belgium and Sri Lanka:-

About Belgium

  • Belgium has borders with Netherlands, France and Germany.
  • 59 per cent lives in Flemish region and speaks Dutch language.
  • 40 per cent lives in Wallonia region and speak French language.
  • 1 per cent of the Belgians speak German.
  • The capital is Brussels 
  • In the capital, 80 per cent are French speakers while 20 per cent are Dutch speakers.

Problem

  • In Capital city Brussels, Dutch-speaking people constituted a majority, but minority in the capital.
  • The minority French-speaking community was relatively rich and powerful as Dutch-speaking community got the benefit of economic development and education much later.
  • this led to tensions between Ducth-speaking and French-speaking communities during 1950s and 1960s.

About Sri Lanka

  • The major social groups are Sinhala-speakers (74%) and Tamil-speakers (18%)
  • Two sub-groups of Tamils were - Tamil natives of the country ( Sri Lankan Tamils- 13 %) and whose forefathers came to India as plantation workers during colonial period (Indian Tamils)
  • Most Sinhala-speaking are Buddhist.
  • Most Tamils are Hindus or Muslims.
